We’re partnering with KI Norge for the Norwegian AI Championship 2026. KI Norge is the government’s new national arena for innovative and responsible AI, being established in Digdir on assignment from the Digitaliseringsdirektoratet (Digdir) and Public Governance, designed to be a hub that connects public sector, industry, research and technology development. A core part of KI Norge is the joint guidance and a regulatory AI sandbox with Nasjonal kommunikasjonsmyndighet (Nkom) and Datatilsynet, so organisations (especially startups and SMEs) can develop and test AI in safer, more controlled frameworks, aligned with the EU AI Act and other relevant rules. The government has also allocated 30 MNOK to establish KI Norge, the AI sandbox, and the national AI oversight setup — signalling real momentum behind responsible adoption. While the Norwegian AI Championship does not require any physical meetup, we will offer several places across the country with events and desks throughout the championship. The main hub will be located at Mesh Youngstorget, where we will host the official kick-off on Thursday, March 19th. Rumours have it that some important AI profiles are showing up. We are pleased to team up with Mesh Community for this: one of the largest startup communities in the Nordics (5,000+ members and 100,000+ annual users), originally founded in 2012 as Oslo
We're partnering with TEK Norge, the industry association for 350+ Norwegian tech companies. Through their new "KI-kontor" and role in New Nordics AI, TEK Norge is driving AI adoption across the region. Together, we're making the Championship a tool for closing Norway's AI skills gap, connecting talent with industry and real adoption.
1 000 000kr will be awarded to the AI Champions of Norway in 2026 March 19-23. The Norwegian Government Unit (KI Norge) is now a partner of the Norwegian AI Championship. We signed a Letter of Intent today, and we look forward to collaboration on finding the next talents in the field, as well as creating a national championship that brings excitement to everyone for the field of AI. I am very happy to share these news only a few days into the creation of our new government unit. Part of our mandate is in supporting hackathons, competitions and initiatives to build AI talents here. Industry, academia, public sector, students and civil society — anyone can participate. Let
We're teaming up with Google to host the Norwegian AI Championship, providing participants with cutting-edge Gen AI capabilities and cloud infrastructure. By partnering with global leaders, we're building local technology strength while staying technology-agnostic, choosing Google this year for their leading AI capabilities and strong Nordic cloud presence.
When raising the prize pool of the Norwegian AI Championship to 1.000.000 NOK, we got a lot of concerns about what the winners would spend the money on. In the recent article in Shifter.no (link in comments), we redirected the concern to whether Komplett.no and Multicom Norge AS would have enough GPUs for the winners. Several reports from the likes of TEK Norge, Martin Bech Holte and Allon Groth states Norway is behind the other nordic countries. Putting 1.000.000 NOK directly into the hands of the best AI teams in Norway is not a stunt – it’s a very deliberate investment in Norwegian innovation and tech talent. We want more people to build, not just watch from the sidelines. For non-Norwegians: “Some people have expressed concern that the winners will just party away the entire sum. Mikael and I, on the other hand, say we’re more worried that Komplett will run out of GPUs right after the winners are announced. I think the winners are more likely to spend the money on server racks than on champagne,” says Bohne.
